Ronald McDonald House

This project was a summer-long labor of love for Karen and I, to paint the dining room at Ronald McDonald House with favorite scenes from the state of Oregon, in memory of the Smith and Mayer family who tragically lost their lives in Alaska last August. It features a wonderful train that circles the ceiling at a push of a button, and wraps the whole room with warm, glowing images of the outdoors and trains and special memories for Mindy Mayer, as it adds some joy and comfort for the families who stay at the house.

It has been my honor and privilege to, along with my partner, Karen Carman, paint many rooms at the Ronald McDonald House at Emanuel Hospital in NE Portland. Over the past few years we have been involved in painting an Oregon farm scene for the Washington County Medical Alliance, a serene western scene for Wells Fargo, a fun and whimsical North Pole for Coca-Cola, a college dorm room with campus views for the University of Oregon Ducks, and for a very special donor, we were delighted to get to decorate, paint and accessorize an entire room ourselves (on her behalf). Her daughter wanted something with a horse theme, so we came up with a nostalgic western room. We are so grateful for our involvement in these and all our other projects at RMH, and hope to help out in ways large and small for the rest of our lives. There are many, many other talented and generous artists featured at the House, and it is such a special place for all involved. Karen and I were lucky to get to paint at the West Portland Ronald McDonald House in 2007! We made some new friends, and had a wonderful experience painting this farm scene in the dining room. It was inspired by and dedicated to an RMH family, and we feel so grateful to have been involved in this project and to be touched by the lives of the people at West House, families and staff alike.
